BNA’s Happy Hour Deals: Cocktails & Appetizers Under $10

What’s up friends? I hope you all had an amazing Valentine’s day celebrating with your loved ones. I would like to introduce you to BNA’s Happy Hour. I was looking for dinner reservations one week before Valentine’s day, wanting something close to our other plans. BNA was the only spot that could accommodate our booking for 5 around 5 pm. I wanted to check out the menu before, and stumbled upon their super saver hour from 5-6 pm. Meant to be? I think so!

What To Expect

Their super save hour is on form 5-6 pm every single day! The menu includes a little bit of everything like beers, wine, cocktails, appetizers, and mains. When I see cocktails for less than $10, I’m having a happy dance! Paid parking is available on the street, and the vibes are casual industrial. I started reminiscing in the days they used to hand out fresh baked cookies at the end of the night. They are definitely a Kelowna staple and a must try even if you can’t make it to their happy hour.

What Did We Try?

We tried almost everything on the super save menu starting off strong with the Coffee Martini. I’m almost thirty and it’s never too late for caffeine, especially if you’re trying to stay out till 10 pm OR LATER. We also tried the Pineapple Express Slushie and Harvest Fizz. We did not bother with wine and beer since the cocktails were such a steal at $9!

Girl eating a slice of marinara pizza, surrounded by other items from BNA happy hour

Next we ordered the Cajun Truffle Fries and Pork Steam Bun for only $10 each. The steam buns are actually tacos and not the full bun experience. For my Asian table this was sad, but 2 come in an order which made up for it! The fries were incredible and I loved the Cajun kick.

Finally, our mains came and we ordered the Marinara Pizza and Chicken Wings which were good but nothing special. Still great portions for the price. I think the smash burger would’ve been good, since that’s one item they have a whole side of their shop dedicated to them. So we will definitely have to try those next time!

Final Thoughts

BNA’s happy hour was a killer spot for appetizers and drinks on the low. Be wary that the server doesn’t always tell you the deal is on. Ask for the menu or pull it up on your phone and get in on those super save deals!

As always, I hope you guys are having the best time Discovering Kelowna 🍽️

Grand Opening of Baked: Your New Go-To Cake Spot in Kelowna

Got a sweet tooth that needs satisfying? Kelowna just got a brand new bakery specializing in all things cake called Baked downtown on Lawrence ave. Cindy has always had an online store but has finally given the people what they want, MORE CAKE. Their grand opening is happening this Saturday but you know I already taste tested 🍰

What To Expect

Walking in, it’s a small space with two tables. Each table only sits two people, meaning this setup makes a great spot to catch up one on one with someone. There are tons of local vendors adorning the shelves with things from cute mugs to cake decorating goodies. Baked is known for their cake cups and some of the biggest macarons I’ve ever laid eyes on. So both are must tries! She has plenty of cake focused options and then some fun always changing additions. Each come in different flavours so you’re sure to find something you’ll love! She also does custom cake orders and cake tasting packs. Even if you’re not getting married her cake tasting kit is such a fun way to “have it all”.

What Did We Try?

Let’s start with the macarons, we tried one of every flavour and of course my favorite was pistachio…but pumpkin spice was a close second. As I mentioned above, they’re massive making them a great bang for your buck and easy to share. Photos courtesy of my friend Mikayla💖

We also tried their cake cups which come in plenty of flavours and options. They come with icing, cheesecake, mouse, or custard depending on what she has on rotation. I’m not a huge icing fan to start with, but the pumpkin spice combo was tasty. The oreo cheesecake combo was heaavveenn though, and I’d highly recommend.

Final Thoughts

Cindy has opened a wonderful bakery in Kelowna that focuses on all things cake! Although we have many pastry bakeries we don’t have one that focuses on cake and makes it accessible in small quantities. I also love how much she supports local businesses, bringing in so many fun cake themed items. This spot is so cute and perfect for celebrations and budgets of all sizes.

Her grand opening is this Saturday November 16th starting at 10am, I hope you check her out and have the best time Discovering Kelowna. 🎂

Best Ramen Spots in Kelowna : Ramen Arashi

Is it just me or is everyone getting sick right now? Thankfully I’ve avoided it so far, but for those of you who are feeling out for the count, my top recommendation is to get nice piping hot bowl of ramen in you! There’s a few spots for ramen in Kelowna, but I want to bring some attention over to one of my favorites: Ramen Arashi.

What To Expect

Located in the landmark district, Ramen Arashi is a popular lunch spot. The dining room itself is about the same size of the kitchen, so seating is nice and cozy to your neighbors. They’re part of a franchise, and are the first of franchises to hit Kelowna, with 2 different chains opening soon. What sets them apart from other ramen spots is how fast the service is, how affordable the cost is, and how generous the size is.

What Did We Try?

We’ve been here a couple times now and have tried a variety of different dishes, and all have been excellent. Lately I’ve really been enjoying the Devil’s Arashi. Spicy and warm, perfect for clearing out the sinuses and enjoying a gray day. If you’re like me and don’t think any meal is finished without a sweet treat, then the mochi ice cream is the perfect small bite, and I definitely recommend.

devil's arashi

Keep in mind, that they’re part of a chain which comes through in terms of noodles and broth. The noodles aren’t hand made and if you’ve been to some local food trucks like Little Tokyo Ramen, you know the difference. What it lacks in local love, it makes up for in price, being under $20 for a bowl with all the fixings, that’s not something you’ll find anywhere else.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for ramen that’s ten times better than the prepackaged stuff, you need to check out Ramen Arashi to see for yourself why it’s one of the best ramen spots in Kelowna. Its aesthetically pleasing, while also being tasty, quick, and affordable. We love how creamy the broths are and how it comes with so many toppings. They also offer vegetarian options and some other fun desserts to try like Taiyaki filled with red bean!

Have you guys tried them out yet? Be sure to add them to your Discovering Kelowna bucket list 🍜

Top Coffee Shop in Kelowna: Sprout Bread Shop Review

I’ve been here several times, and it has to be my favorite place to introduce people to. Sprout Bread Shop is known for their cozy vibes, delicious donuts and community style seating. What I love most about this spot is how it’s perfect for whatever mood you’re in. Just want to grab a coffee and jet out? They have a dedicated side of their shop for that called the slowside symbolized with cute snail! This side is their specialty brew bar, but offers everything their other side has to offer as well. With hundreds of Google reviews you’ll quickly see that I’m not the only person that thinks this is the best coffee shop in Kelowna.

What To Expect?

Sprout is tucked away on Cannery Lane downtown Kelowna. They have some outdoor patio seating, long tabled for shared seating, and little nooks for more private seating. There are two doors to enter, one being the slow side, and the other being the regular or faster paced side. Baked goods go fast, so if you’re craving their donuts you have to arrive at a decent time. The line up is usually to the door but moves very quickly. Service is also quite speedy which is surprising, especially for a spot this busy!

What Did We Try?

I’ve been here so many times, and I absolutely recommend getting the bacon and eggs. For only $15, it’s fulfilling, has a ton a flavors, roasted potatoes and veggies, and a variety of sauces. If you don’t have time for a full sit down meal, they also offer a variety of baked goods to go. Their almond croissants were heavenly, and we can’t forget their glorious donuts. Filled with different custards and such, these are hands down my guilty pleasure.

food items at the coffee shop

Last but not least, we can’t forget to mention their coffee and other drinks they serve up. With cute latte art in every cup, booze options available, and specialty flavors, it’s no wonder this is the best coffee shop in Kelowna. Even if you’re not a coffee drinker, they have tea lattes and hot chocolate. They also have ciders, beer, and wine if you’re feeling fancy!

latte art and a donut

Final Thoughts

This spot is a local must try. Hands down the best coffee shop in Kelowna, offering everything you could ever ask for. The atmosphere, the food, the coffee. This is a well rounded shop that is local and worth a visit. If it was open later for late night study sessions, that would truly be the cherry on top, but alas. We are still so blessed to have them!

Please add these guys to your list of things to do and have the best time Discovering Kelowna

Ultimate All-You-Can-Eat Hot Pot in Kelowna

All you can eat hot pot has finally hit Kelowna and you can now get it downtown at Pick Thai. You can find this gem every Saturday night and book a table for one of their two sittings starting at 4:30pm

What to Expect

It’s $36 per person and includes some snacks to start with, a clear broth, a hot and sour broth, over 20 hot pot items to pick from, unlimited soft drinks, and a vanilla ice cream cone at the end. Come in stretchy pants and eat until you can’t see your toes!

The broths come hot to your table, so there’s no waiting around for it heat up and you can make them spicier if you so choose. There’s a ton of different protein options to get your money’s worth, like beef, seafood, and pork.

Array of all you can eat hot pot items

We tried a little bit of everything, going hard on the seafood. They serve different proteins like whole shrimps, tons of different fish balls, squid, imitation crab, pork, beef, and eggs. They also had different noodles and veggies to go in your hot pot! For drinks you get unlimited pop to go with your meal, but if you know me, you know my obsessions with Pick Thai started a looonngg time ago with their iced Thai Tea, which I highly recommend to everyone. They also have such a fun drink menu to choose from of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks, and I mean if you’re already going out you might as well go ALL OUT. After all that hot pot, we polished off the meal with some vanilla ice cream.

all you can eat hot pot

Final Thoughts

Pick Thai’s all you can eat hot pot was an incredible deal. Ploy the owner, is so hospitable and makes the entire experience that much more enjoyable. The food is amazing, and hot pot is only served at 2 spots in Kelowna, and this is hands down the best out of the two. If you’re looking for something other than hot pot, she also serves traditional Thai food, with the choice of traditional Thai spice levels if you can handle the heat.

As always I hope you have the best time Discovering Kelowna 🍲

Under $20 All You Can Eat Buffet

We were on the hunt for all you can eat (AYCE) buffets in town, and realized that most places are about $30 or more! So I scoured the internet so you don’t have to, looking for the most affordable AYCE in Kelowna. I reached out to our friend Brijesh from Made In India, and he invited us in to check out their daily lunch buffet from 11-2pm every day.

What to Expect?

We went to the Commerce Ave location which had lots of FREE parking. If you’re trying to beat the lunch rush, get there between 11-12pm. They had plenty of dishes to offer including rice, curries, pakora, a salad bar, chutneys and desserts. We managed to finish 2 plates each, dessert, and a mango lassi (of course!).

What Did We Try?

When it’s a buffet do you not just try a little but of everything? For me, the standout items were the onion pakora, butter chicken and PINK gulab jamun. Naan bread is also included! The onion pakora was like a bite sized onion flower that you get at fairs. They were crispy and with a little bit of sauce, outstanding. For the butter chicken, I’m plain and just think butter chicken is always good, BUT in my defense they won gold for best indian food in Kelowna. The pink gulab jamun was tasty on its own but really good in the kheer (a rice pudding of sorts). The kheer soaked up the excess syrup and helped mellow out the sweetness.

Final Thoughts

This was a great place for a lunch buffet! If you’re looking to take a larger group of people out for lunch and want to try something new I would highly recommend this all you can eat. They have two locations that offer buffet, Commerce Ave in Kelowna and Carrington Road in West Kelowna.

I hope you’re having the best time Discovering Kelowna and I can’t wait for you guys to check this spot out!

Food

The Office Brewery

Here’s a great place to kick back with friends and co-workers after a long day of work! The Office Brewery is located in the downtown brewery district and is known for their cocktail flight and delicious share plates. They have a gorgeous bar and their own craft beers that are sure to impress.

What to Expect?

This baby is in the brewery district which means parking is scarce! We found spots along Vaughan Avenue, located right behind the restaurant which were free for a few hours. The space isn’t too big but it’s busy which really made it feel like your friendly neighborhood pub. The service was impecable and there were plenty of veggie friendly options on the menu!

What Did We Try?

We had a little bit of everything, and ALL veggie friendly items! For beverages we had the cocktail flight which included the Spicy Pineapple Margarita, Spiced Cider, Pumpkin Spice Hazelnut Shaft, and Fall Red Sangria, the In The Black – Black Raspberry Sour, and the Vacation Pay – Raspberry Wheat Ale. I have never considered myself a beer drinker but Maggie was spot on with her recommendation, and I found the something that I ended up absolutely loving! The Sour was amazing and she let us know that it’s a great way to ease into beers if you’re like myself.

Sangria at The Office Brewery
Raspberry Sour at The Office Brewery

For food, we had the Spicy Feta Dip, Spicy Halloumi Tacos, Mexican Perogies, and Burrito Bowl. I would say the spice on the dip, tacos, and bowl washed down perfectly with any of the beverages they were serving up. It was spicy but didn’t linger for too long which was nice. The tacos were very flavourful and the green sauce was *chefs kiss*. My favourite dish would have to be the perogies though! They were just the comfort food I was looking for on a chilly Autumn day.

Final Thoughts

My final thoughts on The Office Brewery are that the portions are fair for what they charge. Parking is not the gretest for the district in general, so it would be an awesome spot to bar hop or go on a brewery tour with a safe ride home! The cocktail flight is a unique offer that I would recommend if you’re looking for something different, and if you get in before they change up the flight, the Pumpkin Spice Hazelnut Shaft is BOMB. Huge thank you to Chris the owner and Maggie our server for having us and giving us an all-star experience! As always, I hope you guys are having the best time Discovering Kelowna 🤩

Gather

Looking for a great date night spot this week? Look no further than Gather. A delicious patron focused spot that offers Korean and Italian dishes. They are located downtown between the library and YMCA. This place has great portion sizes and a creative drink menu that is sure to leave you with a lasting impression.

What to Expect?

Gather is one of the few restaurants we’ve been to with a high standard of exceptional customer service. When seated you are given a side stool for your purse which is such a nice touch, especially for someone who normally just shoves her bag behind her on the seat. I’m always looking for the table hooks and always dissapointed. They start you off with a welcoming bite and sip to get things started. The sip is non-alcoholic and the bite is something small yet creative. Gather has won Wine Spectator Award of Excellence 2023, so you can expect to see a curated selection of wines on their drink menu.

What Did We Try?

Something to note is that the dishes are not a fusion between Italian and Korean cousine. The dishes are seperate which lets you indulge in your favorite Italian or Korean comfort foods such as gnocchi alfredo or bibimbap. I’ve now been here a few times wich is why I can say it’s their standard of care that really sets them above the rest. The service is absolutely top notch here. My favorite dishes so far are the Fried Tofu and Gnocchi Alfredo.

My runner up choices are their Korean Beef Tacos and Salmon Wasabi. They are signature dishes on their menu which means they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. We loved the tacos. Anything carrying the tender juicy bulgolgi meat to our mouths is a winner. The salmon was artistfully presented and you can watch the chefs plate your meal with their open kitchen concept. Look at that plating! Absolutely stunning work.

Wasabi Salmon at Gather

Final Thoughts

My final thoughts are this restaurant goes above and beyond to leave a lasting impression on their patrons. It feels like you’re getting dinner and a show with the grand gestures such as the welcome bite, purse stool, and open kitchen. The menu doesn’t change too much between the seasons which makes this place a great staple restaurant. Anyone else cry a little when your ride or die menu item gets taken down? Have no fear, Gather will always be here. Hehehe.

As always I hope this post has helped you with Discovering Kelowna 🍽️

The Ricco Room

Looking for the perfect spot to be be boujee and wow your friends? The Ricco Room has decor that brings you straight to the tropics. Complete with swinging chairs and living plant decor covering the space, you’re sure to feel like you’ve been transported to a sweet escape.

What to Expect?

This little gem used to be a little winery with some questionable background history. With a much needed makeover from new owners, it’s now the talk of the city! Parking is available on the street but it’s location can make some parking spots more questionable being close to Leon. Prices are as mentioned above, BOUJEE. So don’t come here looking for $5 high balls babe, these are expertly crafted cocktails made to transport you to another space ✨

What Did We Try?

We had the Wild Prawn Ceviche, Alaskan King Crab Tostada, Gochujang Chicken Wings, Truffle Prime Rib Burger, and some delicious drinks. I will let you know that portions are small except for the burger and each dish was in the $20-25 range. I would recommend getting at least a few dishes to share and budgeting for about $60-75 per person. The dishes are good but the drinks are the real stars of the show.

Let’s start with absolutely gorgeous Fairy Godmother and the Wild Prawn Ceviche.

the fair godmother at ricco room

STUNNING. Drinks are all 2-3oz of liquid courage and so so good. They have lots of options, including mocktails and Rico Bambino wine. The Fairy Godmother cocktail came with a citrus smoke bubble that I couldn’t resist! After the first sip, I realized how dangerous this place was. Drinks that strong that taste so good? TAKE MY MONEY. The drink lists are extensive and sure to keep you coming back to try something new every time. The ceviche was missing the classic citrus flavours that normally acompanies the dish, which for us latinos was dissapointing. The toastada however, made up for it 10 times over! So much flavor in every bite, exactly what your staycation needs. The star of the show had to be the Truffle Prime Rib Burger served with kettle chips. It was juicy, filled with toppings, and had a fun switch up from the standard fries.

Final Thoughts

Our final thoughts on The Ricco Room are that the drinks and decor are worth it. The instagrammable moments in this restaurant are never ending. It is a bit pricier than other places but has a relaxed vibe. For me this is the perfect place to come right after the office to unwind with co-workers and friends. The price vs value for food is a hit or miss depending on what you order. We ended up leaving hungry but had just enough room to check out Amore Mio for some evening gelato. Win-win situation! As always, I hope this has helped you with your next Discovering Kelowna advenure!

Food

Xing Yun

There are few places in Kelowna that offer dim sum, but the city’s Asian cuisine is starting to come along. I had the pleasure of taking my whole family out for lunch at the newly opened Xing Yun, owned by Rich Tea. First thing to know about dim sum is you need to take people with you to order lots of different dishes!

What to Expect?

If you want to order the barbeque duck or peking duck, you need to order 2 days in advance. I highly recommend adding this baby onto your order if you want to get the whole experience! Between the twelve of us we ordered 20+ dishes and bubble tea, averaging to about $34 a person. There is lots of FREE parking availabe, and this resraurant has a drive through for takeout (WHAAT??!).

What Did We Try?

The list is long and delicious! Be warned, some dishes were eaten up too fast for a picture. Sorry in advance 🙈. We had the shrimp spring rolls, szechwan style popcorn chicken, chicken coconut laksa soup, salt & pepper squid, shrimp chow mein, house special fried rice, ginger beef, ginger chicken, ginger tofu, garlic stir fried gai lan, har gow, house sui mai, sticky rice, fried pork dumping, crispy sesame ball, chicken feet, BBQ por bun, beef chow flat noodle, green onion pancake, crispy pork intestines and of course the barbeque duck. PHEW! That’s a long list of food! We most definitely had left overs, making this a great place for cheap eats.

xing yun chow mein
xing yun ginger chicken

Dim sum in Kelowna is different than dim sum found in larger cities. There are no carts going around where you can pick off what you like. Everything is made to order and takes about 15 minutes to be delivered. The good news is that Xing Yun has a menu full of pictures, giving you a good sense of what you’re ordering. Some of my favourites include the ginger chicken and house sui mai! Please, if you’re coming with a large group come at the start of lunch service. Otherwise your wait time could be extended to 30 minutes for each round of orders during rush hour.

Final Thoughts?

Our final thoughts on Xing Yun are that it’s great value for the price. Even when it’s just the two of us, the portions are very generous so a few dishes go a long way. I would reccomend going with a larger group to share multiple dishes for the best experience. Although they are partnered with Rich Tea they only offer basic options instead of the full bubble tea menu. For our next visit we will try to save room for dessert and maybe even test out the drive through option! This is definetly a must add for your Discovering Kelowna list!
